Singer/songwriter Steve Earle is planning a tribute to his late son by recording an album of songs he wrote.

Justin Townes Earle died from a probable drug overdose last month, and now his dad and his band The Dukes are heading into the studio to record some of his tunes next month, with a view to releasing them around Justin’s birthday.

Townes Earle would have turned 39 on Jan. 4.

Proceeds from sales of the new album will go into a trust set up for Justin’s daughter, Etta St. James Earle.

Steve’s late son was once a member of his backing band before he went solo in 2007 and became an acclaimed songwriter in his own right, thanks to albums like Harlem River Blues and last year’s The Saint of Lost Causes.
